The University of Georgia has developed a technique to use little pieces of wood as fuel for an explosion engine. It is the first time that a wood derivate has been transformed in normal fuel. (Energy and Fuels)
Plants are always growing upwards. Now we know why. Two teams leaded by Justyna Wisniewska of the polish biological institute based in Torun and by Jan Petrasek of the Science Academic based in Prag have proved how a group f proteins called PIN help the roots to singling out the direction of the gravitational field. As a matter of fact they bring out the flow direction of the vegetable hormone “auxina” which also influences the plants growing up and the correct roots orientation. (Science)
Thanks to a collaboration between Virginia Technical Institute and , the technological University based in Georgia and the American national laboratory Oak Ridge a new technique to get hydrogen directly from wood has been developed. The researchers selected 13 enzymes which can extract the desired hydrogen from starch and cellulose by getting it from polysaccharides used by the plant to store energy or to build its supporting parts. The reaction occurs at a temperature of 30° C and atmospheric pressure.
Leif Kullman, botanist at the Umea University based in Sweden has recently dated a red spruce of 8.000 years. The botanist explains “we have found the group of plants in the central Sweden, in a place that casually wasn’t involved in cutting operations regarding the regional forests. Among effected studies using carbon 14 we have dated the oldest roots of one of the trees and unexpectedly we learnt that they are 8.000 years old. This discovery states that this tree, and probably the group it belongs to, is the oldest living organism nowadays known”. Until now, the oldest tree known by botanists was “Mathusalem”, a Bristlecone pine, about 5.000 years old. Other monumental trees, thousand of years old, are known in Iran, where a cypress is 4.000 years old, in Chile where another similar tree is 3.600 years old. 2-3.000 years old trees are innumerable and existing in the whole world. In Italy, the counting of monumental trees has been realized by the Public forest Ranger staff which has found about 150 units. Through this operation we found out that the oldest tree of Italy, an oleaster, is about 3.000 years old. (La Repubblica)
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants convert solar energy into chemical energy. In the presence of visible light, carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H20) are transformed into glucose and O2 during a complex series of chemical reactions. Researchers at the Centre de Recherche Paul Pascal (CNRS) developed a biofuel cell that functions using the products of photosynthesis (glucose and O2) and is made up of two enzyme-modified electrodes. The cell was then inserted in a living plant, in this case a cactus. Once the electrodes, highly sensitive to O2 and glucose, had been implanted in the cactus leaf, the scientists succeeded in monitoring the real-time course of photosynthesis in vivo. They were able to observe an increase in electrical current when a desk lamp was switched on, and a reduction when it was switched off. During these experiments, the scientists were also able to make the first ever observation of the real-time course of glucose levels during photosynthesis. This method could offer a new means of better understanding the mechanisms of photosynthesis. Furthermore, the researchers showed that a biofuel cell inserted in a cactus leaf could generate power of 9 W per cm2. Because this yield was proportional to light intensity, stronger illumination accelerated the production of glucose and O2 (photosynthesis), so more fuel was available to operate the cell. In the future, this system could ultimately form the basis for a new strategy for the environmentally-friendly and renewable transformation of solar energy into electrical energy.
